About Us
Ken Martin, owner of Cody Wyoming Adventures, has been living the Cody, Wyoming outdoor adventure life for over 30 years.
River Rafting Experience
During Ken’s first year as a boatman on the Shoshone River, in 1972, he guided for the Shoshone River-Float, Cody, Wyoming’s original company. Shoshone River-Float was owned by Kit Cody, the great-grandson of Buffalo Bill Cody. In 1976 Ken became the head boatmen and manager of Shoshone River-Float, taking on the responsibilities of training all the new white water river rafting guides. In 1978 Ken and two of his adventure buddies broke out on their own and started their own whitewater rafting company, WRT. Within months WRT became the #1 whitewater river rafting company in Cody, Wyoming. Still young, and loving the freedom of “just being on the river” Ken sold his share in WRT in 1982, but stayed on as boatman so he could continue to whitewater raft every day – all day! By 1996 Ken felt there was a need for a river rafting company that had a more personal touch. Red Canyon River Rafting was born.
“I don’t believe in mass transit to the river. When I hire a guide I hire a person that takes pride in his company and wants to share his love of the river with others.”
1997 brought Ken his most high profile outdoor adventure to date. Ken had an opportunity to discuss the safety of a stunt to be performed with Mickey Gilbert, stunt coordinator for Walt Disney who was famous for the jump in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Ken was contacted by Walt Disney who felt that his expertise and knowledge of the rivers in this area would be of use in the production of the extreme sport movie “Meet the Deedles.” He signed on in July and Red Canyon River Trip’s entire staff began working on August 4th as safety personnel and guides during the filming on the Clarke’s Fork River just outside of Cody, Wyoming.
The Wild Horses of McCullough Peaks
Ken’s first wild horse sighting got him hooked! It’s hard not to respond to the sound of thundering hooves as a herd of wild horses races past you on the open range.
The herd of wild horses you’ll visit on a Red Canyon Wild Mustang Tour live on the McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area – a section of land that encompasses 109,814 acres of land. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages both the Herd Management Area and the herd of wild mustangs that live there. Visit the BLM McCullough Peaks HMA web site for additional information.
Yellowstone Wildlife & Photo Tours
Having spent a great deal of time focusing his camera on wild horses, Ken’s eye soon turned to other wildlife photo ops. The McCullough Peaks is home to much more that wild horses, and photos of antelope, mule deer, picket pens, eagles and more, often found their way home on Ken’s camera. With the premier wildlife watching location in the country – Yellowstone National Park – at his back door Ken decided to expand his wildlife photography adventures. Ken began Yellowstone Wildlife & Photo Tours in 1997 and now offers visitors to the area an opportunity to visit Yellowstone without the stress of driving in Yellowstone. By taking advantage of a well informed professional guide guests can focus on the wildlife, scenic vistas, and all that Yellowstone has to offer.
